GRANT FUNDS EXPAND MEDICAL SERVICES AT SCHOOL CAMPUS

GRANT FUNDS EXPAND MEDICAL SERVICES AT SCHOOL CAMPUS

September 16, 2014 Bastrop, LA – Morehouse Community Medical Centers, Inc. (MCMC), has opened a School-Based Health Center at the Bastrop High School (BHS) Campus. The health center is located behind Bastrop High School, next to the school’s cafeteria.  The health center serves the students who attend Bastrop High School, and is open when school is in session.

“As principal of Bastrop High School, I can tell you that the entire school is very excited about this opportunity.” said Dr. David Nordman, “Many of our students became accustomed to having this convenience when they were students at Morehouse Junior High and they are well aware of the benefits from this program. We will be able to reduce absenteeism and increase student instructional time through the efforts of this program. I would like to personally say thank you to everyone involved in making this become a reality!”

In December, 2009, MCMC, opened the only School-Based Health Center (SBHC) in Morehouse Parish.  The SBHC is located at Morehouse Jr High School, which served the student population at Morehouse Jr High School as well as Bastrop High School.  The opportunity to open another SBHC came about when Morehouse Community Medical Centers was awarded a grant from The Living Well Foundation. “Joint efforts between Morehouse Community Medical Centers, The Living Well Foundation, and Morehouse Parish School Board have made this opportunity for Bastrop High School students possible,” stated Sharon Ray, SBHC Coordinator, “the on-going operational costs of the SBHC is provided by Morehouse Community Medical Centers.”

According to John Schlitt, the Executive Director of the School-Based Health Alliance - a national advocacy organization for SBHCs, Louisiana ranks #1 in nation for growth of SBHC over the last 25 years. Students spend a significant portion of their day on school grounds. Ray goes on to state, “SBHCs are accessible, encourage family and community involvement, reduce student absenteeism, reduce parental leave from work for doctor visits and work with school personnel to meet the needs of the students and their families.”  A SBHC provides convenient access to comprehensive, primary and preventive physical and mental health services for public school students at the school site. Services include:

·         Primary and preventive health care including, comprehensive exams and sports physicals, immunizations, health screenings, acute care for minor illness and injury, and management of chronic diseases such as asthma

·         Mental health services

·         Health education and prevention programs

·         Case management

·         Dental services

·         Referral to specialty care

·         Louisiana Children's Health Insurance Program (LaCHIP) application enrollment

Alice M. Prophit, President/CEO of the Living Well Foundation, adds, “We are pleased to support medical services for students in the school-based health clinic at Bastrop High School by leveraging monies from the Foundation with other resources.  These services will ensure that the students can receive needed care while achieving their academic requirements, and will provide care for those who may not typically have medical coverage or are under-insured.”

Parents or guardians must sign a consent before students can be treated at the School-Based Health Center.  The consents will be sent home during the first week of school this next August.   There is no out-of-pocket expense for the parent or guardians for services provide at either SBHC site, but Medicaid and other third party payers are billed, if available.  A ribbon cutting and open house will be held later this summer.

Morehouse Community Medical Centers, Inc Earns National Recognition for Patient-Centered Care

Morehouse Community Medical Centers, Inc Earns National Recognition for Patient-Centered Care

Bastrop, LA – Morehouse Community Medical Centers, Inc. announced today that they have earned Recognition from the National Association of Quality Assurance (NCQA) Patient-Centered Medical Home 2011 (PCMH 2011) program. NCQA requires use of evidence-based, patient-centered processes that focus on highly coordinated care and long-term participative relationships.  Katie Parnell, CEO, stated, “This Recognition took over a year to achieve.  Our providers have worked hard to meet these standards, because they believe transforming our practice into a patient-centered medical home would improve quality outcomes and overall patient satisfaction.”  A $55,000 grant from US Department of Health And Human Services, Health Resource Services Administration facilitated the patient-centered medical home transformation process for the organization.

The patient-centered medical home is a model of care emphasizing care coordination and communication to transform primary care into “what patients want it to be.”  Research shows that medical homes can lead to higher quality and lower costs, and improve the patients’ overall experience.  “The patient-centered medical home model of care allows us to engage our patients who then participate in their health care decisions,” said Mamdouh Mickail, M.D., Morehouse Community Medical Centers’ Medical Director, Pediatrician and General Practitioner.  “It is the coordination of care and pre-visit planning that improves the patient’s experience.”

Each patient’s care is tended to by clinician-led care teams, who provide for all the patient’s health care needs and coordinate treatments across the health care system.  Medical home clinicians demonstrate the benchmarks of patient-centered care, including open scheduling, expanded hours and appropriate use of proven health information systems.

“The patient-centered medical home raises the bar in defining high-quality care by emphasizing access, health information technology and partner ships between clinicians and patients,” said NCQA President Margaret E. O’Kane.  “PCMH recognition shows that Morehouse Community Medical Centers has the tools, systems and resources to provide their patients with the right care at the right time.”

Morehouse Community Medical Centers, Inc. is among only 147 practices/clinicians recognized state-wide under the PCMH 2011 Program.  Parnell said, “It was a long hard process to earn this Recognition, but well-worth the time and effort, which will improve the quality of care provided to our patients.”
